Arrivano da Slough, sobborgo a ovest di Londra e stanno già creando un notevole "buzz" sulla stampa musicale d'oltremanica. Con un singolo d'esordio come "Darling Buds Of May" i Brother sono riusciti a catturare l'attenzione dei media inglesi con un solo e semplice concetto: l'eterna pop song fatta con chitarra, basso, batteria e una potente linea melodica. Nella loro essenzialità, i quattro ragazzi di Slough hanno rievocato i fasti di una lunga tradizione britannica, che iniziava a soffocare sotto i colpi della musica "sintetica". Dai Beatles agli Oasis, passando per Smiths e Stone Roses, finchè l'Inghilterra avrà periferie e noiosi sobborghi, avrà garantiti grandi gruppi rock. Ora tocca a loro. La parola a Leonard Newell, cantante e chitarrista della band.

Ciao ragazzi, benvenuti su Retrophobic. Prima domanda: potete raccontarci come si è formata la band? Sembrate tutti molto giovani, questa è la vostra prima esperienza musicale?

Non siamo così giovani come pensi. Abbiamo un'età media di 23 anni. Ci siamo formati frequentando i gruppi che giravano in città.  Arriviamo da un posto che si chiama Slough, un sobborgo ad ovest di Londra. Le bands in cui suonavamo prima erano sinceramente orribili. Mi ricordo di aver visto Frank suonare, pensando che fosse uno dei migliori batteristi che avevo mai visto, in uno dei gruppi peggiori. Quando ci siamo incontrati, abbiamo pensato di cambiare vita, e così sono nati i Brother.

Vi definite una band "gritpop" (un gioco di parole tra Brit, inglese, e grit, polvere), avete coniato un bel termine per descrivervi. Io sono cresciuto col Britpop, e mi sono sempre piaciute le buone canzoni pop, come il vostro bellissimo singolo d'esordio "Darling Buds Of May". Cosa vi ha ispirato questa definizione? Slough ha giocato un ruolo in tutto questo?

Grazie. Ci siamo inventati il termine Gritpop per rispondere alla stampa che ci ha inizialmente etichettato come revivalisti Britpop. Abbiamo un grosso legame con i gruppi chitarristici degli anni 90, ma non è tutto ciò che ascoltiamo. Ascoltiamo diverse cose, dagli Smiths agli Stone Roses ai Chemical Brothers a MIA. Slough ha certamente giocato un ruolo importante nel nostro suono. Siamo un prodotto diretto della voglia di uscire da lì e di evitare la routine della vita dalle nove alle cinque. Mi sono sempre sentito trattenuto qui, sin da quando ero piccolo, sapevo che avrei dovuto fare qualcosa di speciale. Quando ci siamo trovati, quello che dovevo fare è diventato evidente.

Da dove arriva il nome "Brother"? E' davvero bello!

Grazie. E' stato buttato lì, e ci è suonato bene dal primo momento. Volevamo un nome che facesse una bella figura in cima alla scaletta di un festival. Man mano che la band progredisce, il nome assume più significato. Abbiamo la mentalità di una gang quando parliamo del gruppo, e penso che il nome Brother rifletta bene la nostra scelta.

Avete altri "fratelli" tra le bands della vostra area?

Sfortunatemente no. Primo perchè non ci sono molti gruppi nella zona da dove veniamo, e secondo perchè abbiamo sempre vissuto nella nostra piccola bolla. Non abbiamo molti amici al di fuori del gruppo, parliamo la nostra lingua e ci divertiamo tra noi. I nostri occhi si sono aperti però, e ora vediamo molti ragazzi di Slough che stanno iniziando a suonare.

Mi piace molto il modo in cui vi presentate, e l'attitudine che lasciate trasparire... i continui rimandi alle sottoculture come i Mods o i Casuals sono per noi un ulteriore motivo di interesse...

Grazie ancora. Non cerchiamo di essere nulla che non ci sentiamo veramente, lasciamo solo che siano le nostre teste a parlare, è una cosa che molti gruppi non fanno più. Vogliamo fare le cose a modo nostro, non ci mordiamo la lingua e non cerchiamo di essere carini per piacere qualcuno. Ci piace avere una bella immagine. I gruppi devono sembrare gruppi!

Cosa ci puoi dire del vostro prossimo album? Com'è lavorare con Stephen Street (produttore di Smiths, Blur, Babyshambles e ainfiniti altri, ndr)? Posso immaginare che si sia creato un bel team!

E' stato l'avverarsi di un sogno. Stephen Street è stato un erore di infanzia per noi, poter lavorare con lui e diventare suoi amici è stato incredibile. Insieme abbiamo creato un capolavoro di album, qualcosa di cui la musica odierna ha bisogno. Il disco si chiamerà Famous First Words, uscirà il quattro di luglio, e sarà l'inizio della rivoluzione! Oh, Brother, where art thou? An interview with Brother's Lee Newell

Hailing from Slough, a suburb on the West side of London, they're creating a big buzz around the whole UK music press. With a killer debut single called "Darling Buds Of May", Brother succeeded to catch the attention of the media with a simple, unique concept: the perfect pop song, built up on a strong melodic line, guitar, bass, and drums. Essentially on focus, the four lads from Slough, revamped the long British songwriting tradition, opposed to the pointless direction of today's indie nonsense. From the Beatles to Oasis, through The Smiths and the Stone Roses, as long as English towns will have boring suburbs, we'll have guaranteed rock'n'roll excellence as a side effect. Now it's Brother's turn. Let's see what Leonard Newell, singer and guitar player of the band has to say...

Hi guys and welcome to Retrophobic webmag Italy. First question: could you please tell us how you guys got together and formed the band? You all seem very young, is this your first experience in music?

We're not as young as you think. Average age of 23. We all met through local bands that were playing around our town. We come from a place called Slough, which is a suburb just west of London. Individually our bands were absolutely dreadful. I remember seeing Frank play and thinking, this bloke is one of the best drummers I've ever seen in one of the worst bands I've ever seen. When we all finally met, we realised what we had to do to make something of our lives and so Brother was born.


You define yourself a "gritpop" band, which is cool, we were all raised by Britpop, and we're definitely in for good pop songs, like your excellent debut single "Darling Buds Of May". How did you come up with such a definition? Did Slough, the place where you come from, play a role in it?

Thanks. We invented the term Gritpop as an answer to the press calling us a Britpop revivalist band. We bonded over 90s guitar bands, but that isn't all we listen to. We listen to everything from The Smiths to The Stone Roses to Chemical Brothers to MIA. Slough certainly played a role in our sound. We are a product of wanting to get out of there and avoid the 9-5 routine. I personally always felt like I was being held back, even from an early age, and I knew I had to do something special. It wasn't until the 4 of us met that it became apparent what I had to do.

Where does the "Brother" moniker come from? It's a really beautiful name!

Thank you. It was fairly throw away when we first came up with it, we just wanted a name that would look good at the top of a festival bill. But as the band goes on it carries more weight as it now has more meaning. We have a gang like mentality within the band and I think the name Brother reflects that.

Have you got other "brothers" among the bands from your area?

Unfortunately not. Firstly there really weren't many bands around the area and secondly we seemed to live in our own little bubble. We don't have many friends outside of the band and so we speak our own language and entertain ourselves. Our eyes have certainly opened now and we are seeing more bands from Slough get together.

We really love the way you present yourself, your outfit and your attitude. Looks like you're familiar with subcultures like the Mods or the football Casuals, and this is another thing we love about you...

Well thanks. We don't pretend to be anything that we're not and we speak our mind which a lot of bands don't do anymore. We want to do this our way and not bite our tongues or be nice for the sake of it. We like to look good as well. Bands should look like bands!

What about the album release? How's it like to work with Stephen Street? We can imagine you and him as a well assorted pair!

It was a dream come true. He was a childhood hero of ours, so to actually work with him and become friends was incredible. Together we have created a masterpiece of an album and something that music needs right now. Famous First Words is out July 4th and that is the beginning of the revolution! Viva Acid Love.
