Arrivano da Stoccolma, e portano nella loro musica tutto il fascino della loro terra d'origine. Si chiamano Youngteam, molti di voi li avranno già scoperti tra i "fissi" delle produzioni della Northern Star Records. Ora il sodalizio tra l'etichetta londinese e la band si è concretizzato con la pubblicazione di un album intitolato "Daydreamer", primo numero di catalogo "non compilation" dell'etichetta. Ho la fortuna di averlo tra le mani con un largo anticipo (l'album vedrà la luce ufficialmente nei primi giorni del 2011), e posso confermare la validità della proposta del quartetto svedese. Una commistione incredibile di generi, dove le chitarre jangle incrociano lo shoegaze, in un deserto artico sul quale si allungano le ombre della new wave. "Daydreamer" è davvero una delle novità del 2011, che apre a nuove ed entusiasmanti ibridazioni nello scenario neo psichedelico internazionale. Salutiamo questa nuova uscita con un'intervista a Fredrik Liljequist, che insieme a Peter Eriksson, Johan Angantyr e Mattias Hägerstrand compone il nucleo della band.

Ciao Fredrik, benvenuto su Retrophobic... il vostro nuovo album sarà presto pubblicato dalla Northern Star Records, e sarà il primo album "non compilation" del catalogo dell'etichetta. Mi racconti qualcosa sulla storia degli Youngteam?
Grazie. Peter ed io suonavamo in un'altra band chiamata Penti, è lì che ci siamo incontrati. Ci piaceva lo stesso tipo di musica, e volevamo suonare qualcosa di più rumoroso. Io avevo da parte alcune canzoni che erano lì da anni, e ho chiesto a Peter se volesse aiutarmi a suonarle. Siamo andati nel nostro studio e abbiamo registrato questi pezzi, con alcuni amici che ci hanno aiutato, bevendo parecchio, suonando, cazzeggiando, non ci sono state regole, facevamo ciò che volevamo.  Così sono nati sia gli Youngteam che il nostro primo Ep "Missnöjesbandet".

Mi sono riascoltato "Missnojesbandet", ritrovandomi in un confortevole globo di luminoso di suono, avevate questa intenzione di creare qualcosa di questo tipo quando avete iniziato?
Le canzoni che stanno sul primo Ep sono pezzi che ho scritto dieci anni fa, erano lì, e sapevo che prima o poi ci avrei fatto qualcosa. Per tutta la vita sono stato affascinato da questi suoni, e quindi volevo creare qualcosa che mi sarebbe piaciuto ascoltare, ed eccoci qua. Anche se il suono è cambiato un po' rispetto al primo EP, abbiamo lo stesso tipo di strutture, atmosfere, riffs di chitarra, etc.

C'è una specie di potere curativo per voi nella vostra musica? Quali sono le sensazioni che prendono il controllo mentre provate o registrate o suonate dal vivo?
Sì, penso di sì, soprattutto quando proviamo o suoniamo dal vivo. Io mi sento calmo e tutti i problemi della vita svaniscono per un po'. Senti la musica che sta in piedi da sola, e tutto questo sembra così naturale...

Ho avuto un assaggio del vostro nuovo album Daydreamer, e sono rimasto davvero impressionato... in che modo siete cambiati da "Missnojesbandet"?
Grazie. Penso che "Missnöjesbandet" sia una storia più felice, "Daydreamer" è una storia più "scura". Da quando abbiamo registrato l'EP e alcune altre tracce su Psychedelica 3 e Revolution In Sound, siamo cambiati un po'. O forse non siamo cambiati, abbiamo un modo migliore di far evolvere le idee. "Missnöjesbandet" è stato registrato da Peter e da me, e suonato per la maggior parte da noi due. E' stato nell'estate del 2005. Dopo l'aggiunta di Johan e Mattias alla band, siamo diventati un vero gruppo, invece di essere semplicemente quattro persone e i loro strumenti." Daydreamer" è stato registrato praticamente in presa diretta, abbiamo aggiunto poco in un secondo tempo. E' stato registrato in uno dei migliori studi della Svezia: andare nella stanza del mixer a riascoltare una traccia appena dopo averla registrata e sentire come suonava rispetto alle nostre registrazioni casalinghe è stato incredibile. Sentivamo già quanto bene suonasse. Mattias, il nostro produttore, ha davvero tirato fuori il meglio.

C'è qualcosa di extra-musicale che ispira le vostre canzoni?
Penso che le idee migliori vengano quando sono molto depresso, questa sembra essere la storia della mia vita, quindi diciamo che scrivo molto, anche se alla fine non uso neanche metà delle cose che scrivo. La maggior parte delle volte è uno stato mentale che decide che tipo di canzone verrà fuori.
Voi definite gli Youngteam come un "collettivo musicale": questo significa che la lineup è soggetta a cambi?
Inizialmente era così, c'erano due membri veri e propri e una serie di persone ospiti sia per registrare che per suonare dal vivo. Alla fine ci sono state 15 persone coinvolte, mettendo insieme registrazioni, canzoni o shows. E' stato molto divertente, ma altrettanto stressante. La band ora è composta solo da noi quattro, e abbiamo ospiti dal vivo, per suonare le tastiere o cantare.  Anche su "Daydreamer"  ci sono degli opsiti. Non siamo più un collettivo, come all'inizio, ma siamo piuttosto una formazione a quattro che usa qualche esterno.

Puoi darci qualche dettaglio sul nuovo album, e sui vostri progetti futuri?
Siamo veramente felici del disco, e credo davvero che sia un buon risultato, onestamente. E' difficile attaccargli un'etichetta, è un po' indie anni 90, un po' shoegaze e un po' 60s. E' oscuro e bello allo stesso tempo. Al momento stiamo registrando un secondo album, che sarà registrato tutto da noi (al contrario di Daydreamer che è stato registrato in uno studio professionale, zeppo di strumentazione vintage). Abbiamo iniziato a registrare in una baracca in mezzo al nulla in Svezia, abbiamo portato tutta la strumentazione e abbiamo suonato per alcuni giorni, giorno e notte. Faremo lo stesso questo Natale, in un'altra baracca, per continuare da dove ci siamo fermati.  Inizieremo a suonare molto di più dal vivo, quando il disco sarà uscito, e faremo un tour inglese con la Northern Star Records. D'ora in poi ci focalizzeremo molto di più sul fattore più importante ora, suonare dal vivo.

Youngteam - Interview

They come from Stockholm, Sweden, and they bring all the allure of their native country into their blissful music. They're called Youngteam, and many of you would have noticed them among the Norther Star Records' "regulars". Now the fellowship between the band and the label is put into action with the publication on "Daydreamer", first "non compilation" catalogue issue on Northern Star. I'm lucky enough to have an advance copy a bit before the official release date (on the first days of 2011), and I can say it's a great piece of music. A musical place where jangly guitars meet shoegaze, in an artctic desert where long new wave shadows are cast. "Daydreamer" is one of the exciting news for the year to come, mixing new influences in the neo-psych worldwide scenario. We salute this wonderful release with their spokesperson Fredrik Liljequist, part of the Swedish four piece with his mates Peter Eriksson, Johan Angantyr and Mattias Hägerstrand.

Hi Fredrik, Retrophobic welcomes you and Youngteam... you're going to license your new album for Northern Star Records, and first of all I'd like to know a bit about the story of the band...
Thank you. Me and Peter were in another band called Penti, thats were we first met. We liked the same kind of music and wanted to play more noisy stuff than we did. I had some songs that I've had for years, and asked Peter if he could help me to record them. We went to our studio and recorded these songs, friends were there helping out,we were drinking  a lot, playing music, hanging out, there were no rules, we just did everything we wanted.  This gave birth to both Youngteam, and our first Ep "Missnöjesbandet".

I was listening back to "Missnojesbandet", and I found myself again in a comfortable, bright globe of sonic soundscapes... did you have a sort of "intention" for your music when you started the band?
The songs that are on the first Ep, some of that songs I wrote ten years ago from today to be honest, I have had them for so long but knew someday I wanted to do something with them. I've been into this kind of music my whole life so I guess I want to do music that I would like to hear, and that's were we are. Even though the sound might have changed a bit since the Ep, it's The same type of structure, moods, guitar riffs, etc.

Is there a sort of "healing power" for you in your music? Which are the "feelings" you get into while reharsing/recording/listning back to your tunes?
I think so, mostly when we reharse and play live I think. I feel calm and all problems in life don't exist anymore. You just realise the music stands for itself, and it feels so natural.

I had a taster of how your new album, and I've been really impressed I can't wait to get it in full... in which way you changed (if you did) from "Missnojesbandet" the new one?
Thanks. I think "Missnöjesbandet" is more of à happy story, "Daydreamer" is a much more darker story. Also when we recorded the ep and some other songs that appears On Psychedelica 3 and Revolution In Sound, we have changed a bit I think. Or maybe not changed, just being better of evolving The ideas. "Missnöjesbandet" me and Peter recorded, and played everything ourselfs mostly. It was summer 2005. After that Johan and Mattias were added, and we became a real band, and we were 4 people playing instruments instead." Daydreamer" is recorded live, and not to many tracks added afterwards. Also it's recorded in one of The best studios in Sweden,  when we were listening in the  control room right after we recorded a track (the basics, 2 guitar, drums, bass) we were amazed what a big difference what were used to with our own stuff. It already sounded so good. Also Mattias our producer made us really play the very best.

Is there something extra-musical inspiring you in writing music?
I think I get the best ideas when i'm really depressed, and that seems to be The story of  my life so I'm writing a LOT of stuff. Although were not using half of it to make songs of them.
Most of The time its the state of mind to decide what type of song to make.

You define Youngteam as a "music collective": does it mean the lineup of the band is subject to changes and extra collaborations? How does it work?
In the beginning that was the thing, we were only a few real members and people were guests both for recording and playing live. I guess we have like 15 people wich have been in the band, only for a short time, or for some songs , or a show. It was a LOT of fun, but also very stressful. The band is the 4 of us now, but we often have guest live, on keyboards and vocals. Even On "daydreamer"  there is some guests. We are not a collective like we use to be back then, now we are more like a 4 piece band using guests if we feel like it.

Could you please give us some details about the new album, and about your plans for the future? Thank you so much Fredrik!
Were so happy about the album, and I think it's awsome to be honest, I really do. It's hard to put a  label on it, a bit of 90s indie, shoegaze and some 60s. Its dark and beautiful at The same time. Right now were recording our second album, and working on that. This album we record all by ourself (in contrast to Daydreamer wich we did in an amazing studio with LOADS of rare vintage stuff). We started recording it in a cabin in the middle of nowhere in Sweden that we borrowed, and took all our stuff there and just played for some days , day and night. We will do the same procedure this Christmas at another cabin, to pick up were we left. We will start playing a lot more live when the record is out, also touring in the UK with Northern Star Records. That's what's most important now and what we will focus on, playing live.
