The Gerry Alvarez Odyssey

A molti dei lettori del nostro sito il nome Gruesomes dice molto... sono stati alfieri dell'ondata garage di metà anni 80, hanno lasciato alle loro spalle una grande fanbase e molte delle formazioni garage contemporanee ripropongono volentieri pezzi del loro repertorio. Gerry Alvarez dei Gruesomes era (ed è) il chitarrista, ora ipegnato in un progetto, The Gerry Alvarez Odyssey, che ha appena pubblicato l'album "Candy Prankster" per la attivissima Ricochet Sound. Proprio la sua etichetta ci ha contattati proponendoci questa interessante intervista.

Ciao Gerry, e benvenuto a bordo! Prima di tutto mi piacerebbe chiederti su cosa stai lavorando al momento... recentemente ho fatto una recensione del tuo album come The Gerry Alvarez Odyssey ("Candy Prankster"), e mi piacerebbe sapere qualcosa in più sulle tue attività...
Abbiamo suonato un paio di shows a Toronto e Montreal, con la mia nuova band, per provare le nuove canzoni dal vivo... ed alcune suonano meglio che su disco, più garage. Sto lavorando per prendere alcune date e per fare un video di "Candy Prankster". Ah, sto anche facendo gli ultimi ritocchi ad un libro di testi sull'album, su alcune canzoni dei Gruesomes, in cui metterò anche foto e altre cose.

Sto suonando la "Gruesomolgy" mentre scrivo queste righe... e vorrei chiederti se la parte "Odyssey" ha sempre fatto parte di Gerry Alvarez, o se l'idea è venuta fuori da una tua particolare ricerca nel corso degli anni...
Mi è sempre piaciuto il rock psichedelico "stile '66" anche nel periodo dei Gruesomes. Suonavamo pezzi psych dei 13th Floor Elevators e degli Standells. Abbiamo anche registrato anche la nostra psych garage song "Hip-no-tyzed" su Cave-In. E' stata solo una questione di tempo prima che uscisse "Candy Prankster".

Se dovessi tracciare un bilancio della tua carriera musicale, quali picchi sceglieresti?
Mi vengono in mente tanti momenti... suonare gli shows per Halloween coi Gruesomes negli anni 80, furono spettacolari se ci ripenso. Quando registrammo il nostro primo singolo nel 1985, non potevo credere che fossimo in studio per registrare quello che sarebbe diventato un vinile.Riunirci insieme per il CD dei  Gruesomes "Cave-In" nel 2000 fu eccezionale, così come il tour in Europa che ne seguì nel 2001, dopo così tanti anni riuscivamo finalmente a venire a suonare lì. Il completamento di "Candy Prankster" dopo anni di lavoro è senz'altro uno di quei grandi momenti.

L'album "Candy Prankster" è molto raffinato, e viene data una grande importanza alle melodie e alle armonie... come hai lavorato su di esse?
Facendo demos per molti anni, e giocando coi suoni e con le idee. Poi è stata solo questione di scegliere quali focalizzare e assiemare. Mi sono sempre piaciute le canzoni con ritornelli melodici, le armonie le ho aggiunte in un secondo momento per enfatizzare.

 ...e cosa suona al momento sul piatto di Gerry?

Ho preso un numero di Mojo Magazine qualche tempo fa, e ci ho trovata allegata una compilation di British Psychedelic Rock del 1967. roba tipo The Smoke, Tomorrow, The Move, Donovan e The Zombies.

Torniamo ai tempi dei Gruesomes per un attimo... era il 1985 circa e il fenomeno Garage iniziava a prendere piede... come hai iniziato a incuriosirti a quei suoni?
Ci piaceva la roba 60's music, il particolare le cose Mod, poi anche i vari Pebbles, Back from the Grave e Nuggets che ci hanno fatto conoscere un sacco di grandi bands, di suoni e di stili. Eravamo dei  60's nerds e ci siamo resi conto che potevamo suonare quella roba. Poi in giro c'erano altre bands come  Fuzztones, Chesterfield Kings, Vipers, che erano un po' più grandi di noi e stavano uscendo allo scoperto... è stata una coincidenza il fatto che non siano stati loro la nostra influenza diretta, ma proprio il 60s originale. Credo che l'ondata Garage ci diede qualcosa di cui essere parte, perchè a Montreal eravamo molto isolati e nessuno in Canada stava suonando quel tipo di musica. Rispetto alle altre bands del movimento, noi eravamo una vera Teen Age Garage Punk band.

...e ora torniamo ai giorni nostri... la stampa UK ha indicato gli Horrors (http://www.myspace.com/horrors) come una delle più eccitanti nuove bands... qual è la tua opinione su di loro?

Parliamo di Toronto... è una buona piazza per suonare e per incontrare musicisti?
Sì, assolutamente, è il centro della musica in Canada. Ho incontrato degli ottimi musicisti che sono molto calati in ciò che fanno e che capiscono la mia musica, e ci sono anche un sacco di fans dei Gruesomes. E' una città rock, non dissimile da altri posti, come la Francia, ad esempio.

Raye della Ricochet Sound mi diceva che c'è qualcosa di nuovo dei Gruesomes quasi pronto per essere dato alla stampa... puoi dirci qualcosa di più?
Stiamo per fare uscire un live dei Gruesomes mai uscito prima... si chiamerà "Live in Hell" e ci saranno gli shows che abbiamo fatto ad Halifax, suona bene e sarà bello tosto. Dovrebbe essere sotto mastering in questo priodo, John Davis ci sta lavorando sopra.

Ultima domanda, come di consueto sull'attività live... farai un giro in Europa (e magari in Italia) nel prossimo futuro?
Sarebbe fantastico. Al momento stiamo lavorando sulle date in Canada, dopo aver sistemato questa cosa proveremo a prendere qualcosa in Europa

Ciao Gerry,and Welcome Aboard! First of all,We'd like to ask you what you're currently working on....I recently reviewed "The Gerry Alvarez Odyssey's" album,so we'd like to know a little about your current activities...
We've played a couple of shows in Toronto and Montreal with my new band in the last months. They guys were great to play with and also getting a feel of the songs live... some sounded even better than on the record, more garage. Working on getting some gigs lined up and a video for "Candy Prankster". Also, putting the finishing touches on a book of lyrics to the Candy Prankster CD, some selected Gruesome songs, including pictures and stuff.

I've got the "Gruesomolgy" Cd playing right now, writing to these lines....and I'd like to ask You if the "Odyssey" Part has always been part of Gerry Alvarez, or the idea came out from a particular music research You came through in these years...
I've always been into psychedelic rock "1966" style even way back in the early Gruesome days. We use to play some psychedelic tunes by the 13th Floor Elevators and The Standels. Even recorded our own trippy psych garage song "Hip-no-tyzed" on Cave-In. It was just a matter of time before "Candy Prankster" would come out.

If You had to trace a sort of balance in Your musical career, what peaks would You Choose?
A lot of moments come to mind... playing the Halloween shows with The Gruesomes in the 80's, those were pretty spectacular when I look back it. When we did our first single in 1985, I couldn't believe we were in a studio making a vinyl. Getting back together for The Gruesomes CD "Cave-In" in 2000 was a mind bender with the European tour in 2001 following that after so many years we were finally playing there. Completion of "Candy Prankster" after years of work is definitely one of the cool times.

The "Gerry Alvarez Odyssey's "Candy Prankster" album is very well crafted, and big importance is given to Melodies and Harmonies....How did You work on These?
Been making demos for many years, playing around with sounds and ideas. Then it was just picking and choosing which ones to really focus on to make them work together as a unit. I've always loved songs with melodic hooks and harmonies that I would add after to give it a chime.

...And What 's actually Gerry spinning on his Turntable?
Bought a Mojo Magazine a little while back and it came with a compilation CD of British Psychedelic Rock stuff from 1967 like The Smoke, Tomorrow, The Move, Donovan, and The Zombies.

Let's get back to the Gruesomes for a while...it was circa 1985 and the Garage Phenomenon started to get importance....How did You start to get involved with those Sounds?
We were all really into 60's music like the Mod stuff at first then the Pebbles, Back from the Grave and Nuggets comps that got us exposed to a whole bunch of great bands, sounds and styles. We were 60's music nerds and realized that we can do that kind of stuff too. Then there were other bands such as the Fuzztones, Chesterfield Kings, Vipers and such, who were way older than us, that were coming out too which I think was a bit of a coincidence cause it wasn't exactly those guys who influenced us to do it, it was the old records that inspired us the most. I guess the Garage wave gave us something to be part of cause in Montreal we were pretty well isolated and in Canada there was nobody else doing that either. Compared to all the others at the time, we actually were a real Teen Age Garage Punk band.

And let's do a time warp again,to 2006... the Uk press tipped (http://www.myspace.com/horrors) as one of the next exciting new Bands... What's Your Opinon?

Let's talk about Toronto, is that a good place to meet Musicians and to Play?
It really is, it's the center of Canadian music. Met some really cool guys and musicians who are really into and understand the music I do, lots of Gruesomes fans here too. It's a rock city... unlike other places such as France.

Raye from Ricochet Sound tols us about something new from the Gruesomes is almost ready to be pressed.....could You tell Us what's Cookin'!??
We are going to release a Gruesomes live recording that has never come out on CD before called "Live in Hell" from shows we did in Halifax, it sounds great and we were tight as hell. It's being mastered right now, John Davis is working on it.

Last Question, Asd usual is about Touring... Are You planning to Fly to Europe and Play some shows ? Maybe in Italy Too??
It would be great. At this time we're looking at Canadian dates and maybe after that we could have a try at some overseas shows.
