The Blue Van

 

I danesi Blue Van sono ormai una giovane ma consolidata realtà 60s mondiale. Cresciuti in campagna, lontani dalle luci della città, i quattro ragazzi (Steffen Westmark, Søren V. Christensen, Allan F. Villadsen, e Per M. Jorgenson) hanno iniziato a suonare per gioco, seguendo la loro naturale inclinazione verso le sonorità calde e "soulful" del R&B inglese dei mid 60s. Dopo aver inciso un primo EP, ed essersi trasferiti a Copenhagen, i ragazzi hanno iniziato ad avere un affezionato seguito e una discreta popolarità, che li ha portati fino alla registrazione di "The Art Of Rolling", debutto sulla lunga distanza. Hanno messo d'accordo un po' tutti, dai giovani infatuati della "new rock revolution" agli appassionati di sonorità vintage della prima ora. Hanno girato il mondo, infiammando le platee dei piccoli clubs da New York a Tokyo, concedendosi anche una "vacanza italiana" come headliner al Beat Fever la scorsa estate. Molti li ricorderanno in quella occasione, altri li scopriranno qui, con le parole del batterista Per.

Benvenuti ai Blue Van, parcheggiate dove volete e venite dentro a prendervi un caffè con noi...
Vediamo dalla vostra biografia che siete cresciuti in un posto isolato in Danimarca, lontano da Copenhagen, dove il vostro viaggio musicale è iniziato senza il glamour di una grande città... ma come avete "tagliato" il vostro perfetto "vestito" Sixties, sia in termini di immagine che di suono?
Per: Guarda, non abbiamo "tagliato" nulla, non siamo, e non importa ciò che dice la gente, una band "a tema". La cosa si è evoluta passo dopo passo, "portando dentro" ciò che ci piaceva. E indossando quello che ci piaceva, per lo stesso motivo.

Rimanendo su faccende biografiche, sappiamo che venite da famiglie di agricolotori, camionisti e carpentieri... questa cosa ci è piaciuta, apprezziamo il fatto di rimanere ancorati alle proprie origini... è una sorta di "orgoglio" che volevate evidenziare?
No, in realtà no. Non ci abbiamo mai pensato fino al momento in cui siamo andati via da casa, e comunque non è una cosa così speciale. Non ci consideriamo una working class band.

Il vostro suono è caldo, analogico, profondo e "vintage"... ma i vostri interessi musicali sono concentrati solo sugli originali? O c'è una specie di "top 10 contemporanea" che potete elencarci?
All'inizio, quando scrivevamo i pezzi, ci muovevamo verso una direzione, verso particolari "sensazioni" che il pezzo doveva dare, mentre ora scriviamo solo ciò che ci suona bene. Non è un procedimento sistematico. Ci piace un sacco di musica contemporanea e sarebbe difficile e scorretto farne una lista... ma per esempio ci piacciono: Ryan Adams, Robbers On High Street, Kings Of Leon, Libertines, The Strokes, Ray LaMontagne, Oasis, Thomas Dybdahl, Ambulance Ltd., The Flaming Sideburns, Mando Diao, Cato Salsa Experience... roba così.

In Italia il pubblico di un concerto è in qualche modo legato alle sottoculture... vogliamo dire, se una band è etichettata come "genere beat" per esempio, ai loro concerti ci saranno quasi esclusivamente Mods o Beatniks, lo stesso per una band rockabilly etc... questo fatto è legato alle "cerchie chiuse" ed è forse una limitazione alle esperienze musicali... voi avete girato gli States, il Giappone e l'Europa: che tipo di audiences vi siete trovati davanti?
Penso che il discorso di diverso da band a band, e anche da quanto la band sia influente. Il nostro pubblico per lo più è composto da ragazzi giovani che amano la musica rock, ma ora che me lo fai venire in mente, in Italia abbiamo suonato per lo più per un pubblico Mod, ed è qualcosa che non era mai successo in altri posti... probabilmente la scena Mod in Italia è molto radicata!

Sappiamo che siete stati a New York per scrivere canzoni nuove... e questo ci ha acceso la curiosità di ascoltare il vostro nuovo materiale... qualche anticipazione esclusiva per noi?
Hmmm... scrivere lì è stato sorprendentemente buono... vi posso dire che la roba nuova è più variegata: più Soul, più melodica e con un bel tocco di Blues "roots". Vedremo...

Grazie molte per essere stati con noi... farete un giro in Italia a farci sentire il vostro materiale?
Niente di pianificato per ora, ma torneremo. Promesso!

Welcome to The Blue Van, please park wherever you'd like to and sit down with us for a coffee :-) ... we can see from your bio you grew up in a kinda isolated place in Denmark, far from Copenhagen and your musical journey is something kept away from glamour and things... how did you "tailor" your perfect 60s dress both musically and in terms of outfit?
Per: We didn't "tailor"anything, we're not, no matter what people think, a theme band. It just evolved step by step, by us "taking in" whatever we liked. And wearing whatever we liked, for that sake.

Remaining on bio issues, we can see you come from families of farmers, truck drivers and carpenters... we loved this, we appreciated the fact of remaining rooted to where you come from... was this a sort of "pride" you wanted to stress out?
Naeh, not really, we never really thought about that untill we mowed away from home, and anyway it's not THAT speciel. We don't publish ourselves as a working class band.

Your sound is a warm, analogic, deep and "vintage"... but is your musical interest basically focused on the "originals" only? Is there a sort of "contemporary top 10" you could list up for us?
Earlier on when we made songs we would often write in a direction towards a particular songs feeling, whereas nowadays we just write what feels good. It's not systemized.
We like a lot of contemporary music and it's hard and kind of incorrect for us to make a list, but some examples: Ryan Adams, Robbers On High Street, Kings Of Leon, Libertines, The Strokes, Ray LaMontagne, Oasis, Thomas Dybdahl, Ambulance Ltd., The Flaming Sideburns, Mando Diao, Cato Salsa Experience and so on...

In Italy the crowd of a gig is somehow "bound" to subcultures... we mean, if a band is nicked to the "beat" genre for instance, at their gig you'll find almost only Mods or Beats, the same for a rockabilly night or so... the problem is related to "closed circles" and this is a sort of limitation to musical experiences... you toured the States and Japan and all around Europe: what kind of audiences did you find?
I guess it's different from band to band and also about how broad a bands appeal is. Our audience mostly consists of young people that simply like rock music, but now you mention it I do remember that the crowds we played for in Italy mostly did consist of mods, which is something we haven't experienced any other places to that extent, but then again it seems like the Italian mod scene is really strong...?

We know you've been in NYC to pen down new songs... and this sparked out curiosity for your new material... any exclusive anticipation for us?
Hmm... The writing has been going surpisingly well and I can tell as much as the new material is more wide ranging; more soul, more melodic and also a good dash of the rootsier blues. Let's see...
