Vengono da Brighton, sono capitanati dalla soul sensation Dionne Charles, e ci sono chitarra, basso, tastiere, batteria, congas, flauto, sax e trombone a mettere giù delle potentissime tracce deep funk. I Baby Charles sono ispirati dai suoni dei tardi 60s, come i J.B.s e i The Meters, e sanno come dare anima alla loro musica.
Hanno ricevuto consensi immediati dai migliori Djs funk in circolazione: Snowboy, Keb Darge, Jazzman Gerald, Monk One, e soprattutto Andy Smith, che ha inserito il loro 45 di debutto per la sua compilation “Let's Boogaloo Vol 4”, e li ha voluti a suonare dal vivo per il lancio della raccolta. Mark Lamarr è rimasto così colpito dal loro singolo di debutto da invitarli a registrare una session di sei pezzi live per la sua trasmissione “God's Jukebox” su BBC Radio 2.
Il loro album omonimo per la RecordKicks è un caldissimo esempio di qualità funk/soul, e noi di Retrophobic abbiamo pensato di presentarvi meglio la band incontrando Dionne per questa intervista... groove on!

Ciao Dionne e benvenuta su Retrophobic. Prima di tutto vorrei chiederti qualcosa riguardo il tuo percorso musicale e le tue “scoperte” che ti hanno portata a ciò che fai ora coi Baby Charles...

Sono sempre stata un'amante della musica in senso molto eclettico. E così non è stato difficile passare dal rock e dal metal al soul/funk. Credo di aver cominciato con il reggae/lover’s rock, l'hip hop funk e il soul, poi sono passata per i Led Zeppelin e Hendrix. Poi mi sono soffermata un po' sull'heavy metal e poi sul rock più retrò, e sull'indie. Poi ho fatto un giro nella house e nel drum and bass, sono tornata al rock e poi al soul e al funk. Al momento mi piace molto l'opera (anche se di fatto non la conosco). Mi sono sempre piaciuti testi e le voci, e tutto questo mi porta a frequentare diverse “aree musicali”.

Se devi mettere insieme una rock band ti servono solo la batteria, il basso, una chitarra e una voce... ma per mettere insieme un collettivo Funk, credo che le cose si complichino un po'... com'è andata coi Baby Charles?

 I Baby Charles hanno iniziato con il bassista, il flautista e il batterista 10 anni fa, con un nome diverso. Hanno gradualmente radunato altri musicisti e io mi sono aggiunta quattro anni fa (quando il nome del gruppo è poi cambiato in Baby Charles). E da quel momento la band ha continuato a crescere.

Siete stati recentemente come “band da tenere d'occhio” dalla prestigiosa rivista Mojo e avete avuto riconoscimenti dalla BBC Radio e da praticamente tutti i Djs Funk/soul del Regno Unito... vi aspettavate un “buzz” così grande?

Penso che siamo ancora tutti molto sorpresi del responso che abbiamo raccolto. Noi non facciamo altro che amare la musica, e la sostanza sta tutta lì.

And what about your life sets? What kind of people usually come to a Baby Charles gig, and what's the most exciting thing in entrataining your crowd?

Di solito sono persone che amano lasciarsi andare e godersi un po' di movimento. Il nostro pubblico non ha limiti di età e i concerti migliori  sono quelli in cui le persone ballano come invasate.

Sono rimasto molto impressionato leggendo delle vostre influenze, che vanno dai grandi classici della Biack Music all'hip hop più “avant”... come siete “polarizzati” verso questa grande varietà di suoni?

Siamo in tanti, e c'è quindi tanta musica da condividere. Abbiamo anche due Djs nella band, e loro stanno sempre attenti ai nuovi suoni che ci sono in giro.

Questo è un momento in cui le sembra predominante il "ritorno agli originali"... voglio dire, il successo di Amy Winehouse, della Daptone Records, di Sharon Jones... mi piacerebbe avere una tua opinione su tutto questo "fermento"...

Penso che sia arrivato con un tremendo ritardo!

Torniamo al groove dei Baby Charles: c'è una "sensazione comune” che la band deve raggiungere per dare un “controllo qualità” alle vostre canzoni?

Diciamo che ci vuole un tempo molto lungo per scrivere una canzone della quale tutti sono felici. Ma quando la band riesce a creare una certa “vibe”, e quando vedi che tutti sorridono mente suonano, beh, vuol dire che il pezzo sarà vincente.

Avete rilasciato il vostro bellissimo album per la label italiana RecordKicks ... come siete entrati in contatto con l'etichetta?

Il DJ Andy Smith ci ha avvicinati per chiederci il permesso di usare uno dei nostri pezzi per l'album “Document 4”. Dopo che la Record Kicks ha ascoltato quella traccia ci ha contattato proponendoci di fare uscire il nostro album, e finora hanno fatto un lavoro ottimo!

Ultima cosa Dionne... prima di ringraziarti per essere stata con noi, avremo la possibilità di vedervi dal vivo in Italia nei prossimi tempi?

Spero di sì, dal momento che la nostra etichetta è italiana. A noi piacerebbe tantissimo, e qualcosa dovrebbe muoversi in questo senso... speriamo di vederci presto in Italia!

Hello Dionne and welcome to Retrophobic webmag. First of all I'd like to ask you about your musical path and your key musical discoveries that led you to what you're playing now with Babycharles...

I have always been a very eclectic lover of music. So did not find the switch from rock and metal to soul/funk very difficult. I suppose I started with reggae/lover’s rock, hip hop funk and soul, then came across Led Zeppelin and Hendrix. I moved onto heavy metal and then retro rock and indie. Then onto house and drum and bass, back to rock then soul and funk. I very much enjoy opera currently (although I don’t really know anything about it). I have always loved good lyrics and voices which takes me to all areas of music.

If you had to put up a rock band you only need drums, bass, guitar and a voice... but if you have to put up a Funk crew, things get a bit complicated I suppose... how did it work with Babycharles?

Baby Charles started with the bassist, Flutist and Drummer 10 years ago under a different name.  They gradually gathered musicians and I joined around 4 years ago (this is when the name changed to Baby Charles). The band just seemed to grown and grown since then.

You've been recently tipped as a hot new band by Mojo and you got props from the BBC and from all the groovy DJs around... did you expect such a big buzz around you?

I think we all are very surprised about the response we have had. We love the music and that is what it is all about really

And what about your life sets? What kind of people usually come to a Baby Charles gig, and what's the most exciting thing in entrataining your crowd?

Usually people who love to let go and enjoy a good boogie. We get all age ranges and the best gigs are always the ones where people dance like fury.

I was very impressed reading your influences, ranging from the big classics to the most "avant" hip hop... how the band member are "polarized" towards such this wide variety of sounds?

There are a lot of us so a lot of music to share.  We are also blessed with 2 DJs in the band who are always chucking new music around.

This is a time where something good is moving in terms of getting back "the originals"... I mean Amy Winehouse, Daptone Records, Sharon Jones... I'd like to have your opinion about this "ferment"...

Let's switch back to Baby Charles' groove: is there a "common feeling" you reach to get the tracks marked as "Baby Charles quality controlled"?

Let's just say it takes a very very very long time to write a Baby Charles track that everyone is happy with.  But you usually get a common vibe and the whole band starts smiling, that’s when you’re onto a winner.

You licensed your wonderful album for the Italian label RecordKicks ... how did you get in touch with them?

DJ Andy Smith approached us to ask to licence one of our tracks for the Document 4 Album. Once Record Kicks heard the track they asked to release our album and they have done a sterling job so far.

Last but not least... before saying "thanks" to you Dionne, is there a chance to see you live in Italy in the near future?

I Should hope so, with an Italian Record label.  We would love to and hopefully there is some work being done on that now and we hope to see you all in Italy soon!
