Negli ultimi mesi si è svilluppato una sorta di fil rouge che lega Retrophobic all’Australia, così dopo gli ottimi Brent McMullen e The Answering Belles questa volta tocca alle Teko apparire sulle ns. pagine. Formatesi a Melbourne dopo l’esperienza che le ha viste militare nelle Dollsquad (che le ha portate in tour in Europa un paio d’anni fa’), il terzetto composto da Julie (Voce-Chitarra) Janet (Basso-Voce) e Nikola (batteria-voce), ha dato vita alle Teko. Il loro primo è un ottimo esempio di indie-pop-rock diretto e senza fronzoli, e questa breve chiacchierata un ottimo metodo per saperne di piu’ su loro i lori ascolti e la loro musica.

-Benvenute, volete presentarci il gruppo e raccontarci la storia delle Teko, eravate già amiche prima di formare il gruppo? Qual’e’ stata la prima cover che avete suonato insieme?

Julie: Ciao, sono Julie chitarra e voce, poi abbiamo Janet al basso e voce e Nicola alla batteria e alla voce. Noi tre suonavamo in un altro gruppo che era venuto in tour in Europa nel 2006, avevamo capito che volevamo seguire una nuova direzione così sono iniziate le Teko. La nostra prima cover è stata “Bad News travel fast” dei Fuzztones. Sarà il pezzo d’apertura sul loro nuovo album di tributo che uscirà fra poco.

Janet: Stranamente siamo diventate più amiche dopo aver fatto il tour in quel gruppo….

-Potete provare a definire le coordinate del vostro suono?

Julie: Canzoni pop intelligenti e contagiose con voci che richiamano i 60’s, chitarre sporche ma accattivanti, linee di basso potenti e melodiche e parti di batteria solide e fantasiose.

Janet: Pop con un po’ di rock con delle armonie sopra. 

-Quali sono le vs. influenze, qual’e’ il primo disco che avete comprato e l’ultimo? C’e’ un disco in particolare che vi ha ispirato a suonare? Collezionate dischi ? 

Julie: Il primo disco che ho comprato è stato “She’s so unusual” di Cindy Lauper. L’ amavo e l’amo ancora. Di solito mi vestivo come lei e avendo i capelli rossi alle volte probabilmente pensavo di essere lei. Quindi, in seguito ho scoperto gruppi come i Belly, Nirvana e i Throwing Muses. Fino allora ascoltavo solo pop commerciale e sentire questi gruppi mi ha fatto capire che c’era del fantastico pop-rock da fare! Cosi mi sono messa al lavoro!

Janet: Il primo disco è stata una compilation australiana dei Rolling Stones “High Tide and green grass” e l’ultimo Mahalia Jackson. Il primo disco che mi ha ispirato, deve essere stato qualcosa dei Doors, ho iniziato suonando il piano e loro erano il primo gruppo che ho trovato che aveva veramente delle grandi parti per il piano, ma che erano rock. Si, colleziono dischi, comprerei delle cose pessime solo per una bella copertina. 

-Com’e’ la scena musicale dalle vostre parti? Ci sono dei buoni gruppi di cui siete amiche, qualche bel club?                        

Julie: Melbourne è nota per avere una scena musicale in salute. Ci sono quintali di gruppi e tanti posti dove si suona dal vivo tutte le sere. E’ grande. E’ la distanza fra le varie città che rende duro andare in tour e ovviamente non puoi suonare settimana dopo settimana nella stessa città C’e’ un limite reale a quanto puoi progredire in Australia. Semplicemente non ci sono abbastanza persone. The Tote, Pony & Ding Dong sono grandi club. I gruppi migliori di Melbourne sono I Deloris, Good Intentions e Little Red. 

-Vi va di parlarci del vostro E.p., siete contente del risultato?Potete parlarci della registrazione e di come funziona la scrittura dei pezzi nella band? 

Julie: L’ E.p. è stato registrato dopo 3 mesi che la band aveva iniziato. Sono le ns. primissime quattro canzoni. E’ stato fatto in maniera veramente veloce e anche se il gruppo si è evoluto un po’ da allora sono ancora un grande esempio delle Teko.Io tendo ad avere molto pezzetti di canzoni incomplete. Le unisco assieme le porto alle altre ragazze e loro aggiungono le loro parti. 

-Quali piani avete per i live? C’e’ qualche possibilità di vedervi in Italia? Con chi vi piacerebbe suonare se ve ne fosse data l’opportunità? Organizzate il vostro festival dei sogni. 

Janet: Stiamo pianificando un tour della Spagna per Febbraio 2008 con la possibilità anche di ritornare durante l’anno. Suonare in Italia sarebbe fantastico ho sentito che ci sono dei locali grandiosi lì. Se mi fosse data la possibilità vorrei suonare con Tegan & Sara.Penso siano delle compositrici e cantanti fantastiche e delle intrattenitrici a tutto tondo…

Julie: ooooh…il festival dei sogni – Aimee Mann, Nada Surf, Throwing Muses, Love, Mary Lou Lord, Richard Thompson, The Cardigans, Cyndi Lauper, The Shangri La’s, Weezer, Rilo Kiley & The Zombies.

-Qual’e’ il prossimo passo per la band musicalmente e professionalmente? 

Janet: Andare in tour!E un altro E.p. per la fine del 2008.

Julie: Si…suonare in Europa! E’ così divertente ed eccitante. Sto cercando di trovare del tempo per scrivere un po’ di canzoni nuove.Divento veramente ansiosa quando il tempo passa e non succede nulla.

-Hello and welcome to our pages, first of all we'd like you please to introduce the band and the story of Teko, were you already friends ? What's the first cover that you played together ? 

Julie: Hello, I am Julie – guitar/vocals, we have Janet on bass/vocals and Nicola on drums/vocals. The 3 of us played in another band that toured Europe in 2006 and we realised we wanted a new direction so TEKO began. Our very first cover was by The Fuzztones – “Bad news Travels Fast”. It is going to be the opening song on their new compilation coming out soon. 

Janet: Strangely we became better friends after touring in that band...

-Could you try to define the coordinates of your sound? 

Julie: Infectious, clever pop songs with 60's tinged vocals, dirty yet catchy guitars, melodic, driving bass-lines, and solid, creative drumming.

Janet: Pop with some rock with some harmonies on top.

-What's about your influences, what's the first record you bought and the last one ? Was there a particolar record that inspired to you playing ? Do you collect records ? 

Julie: My first record was “She’s So Unusual” by Cyndi Lauper. I loved it & still do. I used to dress like her and having red hair probably thought I actually WAS her at times. Then, later on, I discovered bands like Belly, Nirvana & Throwing Muses. Until then I was only listening to commercial pop and hearing these bands made me realise there was awesome rock/pop to be made! So I got to work. 

Janet: First record- rolling stones 'High tide and green grass' (an Australian compilation), last record- Mahalia Jackson. The first album to 'inspire' me to play would have been something by The Doors, I first started out playing piano and they were the first band I found that had really great parts for piano, but was still rockin'. Yeah I collect records- I'll buy really lame stuff if it's got a cool cover.

- How's the music scene of the place where you come from? Are there some good bands you share friendship with, some cool club ?

Julie: Melbourne is well known for it’s healthy music scene. There are tons of bands and plenty of venues with live bands everynight. So that’s great. It’s just the distance between cities that makes touring pretty hard going and you cant play week after week in the same town. There’s a real limit to how far you can progress in Australia. Simply not enough people. Great clubs are The Tote, Pony & Ding Dong. Great Melbourne bands are Deloris, Good intentions & Little Red.

- Do you please want to talk about your debut E.p.,you're happy with the results, tell me about the recordings and songwriting process within the band ? 

Julie: The EP was recorded within the first 3 months of the band starting. They are our very first 4 songs. We were just so keen to get something down and get it out there. It was done really quickly and while we’ve evolved a little since then musically, those 4 songs are still a great example of TEKO. I tend to have lots of bits and pieces of incomplete songs. I patchwork it all together, bring it to the girls and they add their parts.

- What are your plans live-wise? There are any chanches to see you play in Italy ?Who would you like to play with, given the chance ? Plan your Dream Festival ? 

Janet: We're planning a tour of Spain at the moment for February 2008 with plans to go back later in the year also.  Playing in Italy would be fantastic, I've heard there are some really great clubs there...

 Given the chance i would love to play with Tegan & Sara, i think they are fantastic songwriters, singers and all round entertainers...

-What's next for the band both musically and professionally? 

Janet: Touring!!! And another EP by the end of 2008.

Julie: Yes...touring in Europe. It’s so much fun, really exciting. I’m looking forward to getting some time to write a bunch of new songs; I get really anxious when time passes and nothings happening.
